How to Choose a Health Speaker for Your Event

By Dai Manuel, health and fitness speaker. 27 September 2026.

Start with what you want people to do

Most events book a health speaker for energy. Energy fades by the coffee break. Ask a harder question first: what should people be doing differently a month from now? If the answer is moving more, sleeping better or handling stress without falling apart, you want a speaker who teaches behaviour, not one who performs motivation.

Look for lived experience, not a highlight reel

I was 250 pounds at fourteen. I have spent about thirty years coaching since, mostly men over forty with kids, jobs and knees that have opinions. That history matters on stage because the room can tell the difference between someone who read about change and someone who had to do it.

Ask any speaker you are considering where their story comes from, and who they coach now. A current coaching practice keeps the message honest.

Pick the format before the person

A keynote sets the idea. A half-day workshop gives people time to build a plan. A lunch and learn fits a busy team that cannot give up a morning. Decide which one your audience can actually attend, then find the speaker who does that format well.

Ask what people take home

Good health talks end with something small enough to start the same day. Mine is built on The 2% Solution: small daily work that survives a real week. If a speaker cannot tell you the one thing your audience will do tomorrow, keep looking.
