RESTARTING AND GOALS
9 Mondays left.
There are 60 days between today and the end of 2026. That's enough to pick one thing about your health and walk into January with proof.
Dai Manuel · Coach Moose · Vancouver

It's Monday, November 2. Count them out and there are 9 Mondays left in the year, including this one.
It's tempting to write off the rest of 2026. Get through the holidays and deal with it in January.
I know the pull of waiting. I got the weight off at 15, then spent my thirties building a company while my health fell apart anyway. Waiting for the right moment was part of how that happened.
Nine Mondays looks like a small number. Count the days instead and you get 60.
- Monday, November 2, today
- Monday, November 9
- Monday, November 16
- Monday, November 23
- Monday, November 30
- Monday, December 7
- Monday, December 14
- Monday, December 21
- Monday, December 28
Pick one thing
Only one. Pick something small enough that a bad day can't kill it.
- A 20-minute walk
- Protein at breakfast
- Lights out by 10:30
- No drinks on weeknights
If you can, put it in your morning and pick something you don't hate. A 2024 review of health habits found both make a habit more likely to stick.
Why 60 days is the right size
The number you've probably heard is 21 days. It traces back to a plastic surgeon's book from 1960, and it doesn't hold up.
That 2024 review covered 20 studies and more than 2,600 adults. It found median times of 59 to 66 days for a health habit to become automatic. Only four of those studies measured timing directly, and individual results ran from 4 to 335 days, so nobody can promise you a finished habit by New Year's Eve.
What I can promise is the arithmetic.

What 1,378 check-ins told me
I went back through 1,378 weekly reflection forms my coaching clients filled out between 2017 and 2025.
Time was the obstacle they named most. It didn't separate the people who trained from the people who missed.
Tracking did.
Program one

- Not tracking
- 20.7%
Program two

These are self-reported forms, so read them honestly. Tracking and follow-through travel together, and I can't prove one caused the other. I'd still tell you to write it down every day. A checkmark counts.
Workout completion also slid after week 4. Your week 4 ends on Sunday, November 29, so the test arrives on Monday, November 30. Put it in your calendar now, and decide today what you'll do when the novelty wears off.
Wait for January 1 and rep 60 doesn't land until March.
The day you miss
You will miss one. Phillippa Lally's team at University College London followed 96 people building new habits for 12 weeks and found that missing one opportunity didn't materially affect the process.
Researchers at Wharton also found that gym visits climb after fresh starts, including the start of a new week. So every Monday hands you a small reset, and after today you've got 8 more.
A missed Tuesday costs you very little. Quitting over it costs you the rest of the year.
What you carry into January
If your one thing takes 30 minutes, that's 2% of your day and 30 hours by December 31.
On January 1, everyone else is on day one, hoping it sticks this time. You're on day 61, with two months of proof that you keep promises to yourself.

I'm on the same clock. Seven of these Mondays come before HYROX Vancouver, on a shoulder that had surgery in August.
Reading this after November 2? Count the Mondays you have left. The math still works.

See DadBody 28Common questions
- How long does it take to form a health habit?
- A 2024 review found median times of 59 to 66 days, with individual results from 4 to 335 days. Plan on about two months, and expect yours to differ.
- Is the 21-day habit rule true?
- No. It comes from a plastic surgeon's observations about how patients adjusted, published in 1960. Studies that measured habit formation directly found much longer timelines.
- Does missing a day ruin a habit?
- One miss didn't materially affect habit formation in Lally's University College London study. Get back on it the next day.
- Should I wait until January to start?
- You can, but starting on November 2 puts rep 60 on December 31. Starting on January 1 puts it on March 1.
